Still docked at OEFELEIN PLANT; Industrial Outpost in ZETA AQUILAE SYSTEM - 1 jump to beyond destination.
Vessel; Eagle
I haven't moved in days; My ship is still at OEFELEIN. Hopefully when I return to docking bay 16 this evening I will be able to head back out into the 'verse.
Facilities at OEFELEIN are decent enough. I've browsed the Shipyard and Outfitting levels. There is also a not-so-secretive Black Market hidden in plain sight.
I found a small kiosk selling Earth books and was able to pick up a copy of 'A Brief History of Time' by everyones' favourite cyberman; Stephen Hawking, which has been keeping me entertained while I'm grounded. One passage in particular has struck a chord with me due to recent events;
Now, if you believe that the universe is not arbitrary, but is governed by definite laws, you ultimately have tocombine the partial theories into a complete unified theory that will describe everything in the universe. But there is a fundamental paradox in the search for such a complete unified theory. The ideas about scientific theories outlined above assume we are rational beings who are free to observe the universe as we want and to draw logical deductions from what we see. In such a scheme it is reasonable to suppose that we might progress ever closer toward the laws that governour universe. Yet if there really is a complete unified theory, it would also presumably determine our actions.And so the theory itself would determine the outcome of our search for it! And why should it determine that we come to the right conclusions from the evidence? Might it not equally well determine that we draw the wrong conclusion? Or no conclusion at all?
What does this tell us aside from the fact that the universe is most likely the mother of all trolls? Well at first I believed the recent spate of interdictions I had encountered was due to my actions; a combination of high risk errands, dubious cargo and a particularly offensive bumper sticker.
It would seem, according to Roboprof, that because the other ships commanders inhabit this universe their actions are governed by the laws of it. Their interdictions, while malicious, aren't personal. These rogue pilots are destined - or programmed if you will - to be dicks. And at the very least, if the "My other ride is Uranus" bumper sticker does have something to do with these attacks then I can't be held accountable for my actions either!
Additional:
Local security do not share this view point. I plan to leave OEFELEIN once my fines are paid.
